evaluation

Evaluation for visual recording / games design document

 Techniques and tools
to start off my games design document I had to get images for reference so we went to Dartmoor to take images of what has potential to be able help create the idea then we had to start designing our characters ,
I had chosen to design the horse the horse had to have a ghostly look to it because it is a phantom horse so I had to create a character so I had drew an outline of the horse filled in the details and added tones and shades

so I found tools that were useful for this was a graphics tablet and a camera

the camera so I can get the images and use them to manipulate and change them into a game scene as well as as reference for the game in general

the graphics tablet to be able to create the horse character for the game and in shot
in future development I would want to improve the quality of the designs.
for my characters I want to improve this because then I can't make more characters as well as make them interact and match the game art style.

 How successful is your artwork

In my opinion it is successful however I cannot test it because If I were to show the document to a child they wouldn't understand it.

I also think that it doesn't reach to the target audience because it is too dark for the liking of most children like bright colours example: red , blue , yellow.

I think that the art work doesn't reflect the original concept because the concept had at least 5 myths / legends but I had only managed to create 1 character to represent the legend.

I think that the technique I used to get  concept that I had was starting with a research and then a mind map and working on from there I have created this

- What would you change

If I were to change my work if I had done it again I would add more bright colours and get feedback off my ideas for my target audience.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of one of your peers artwork on their blogs.

The concept is clear that it is a racing game that you have more than one worry of just driving straight on the road but also avoid that what is the hairy hands. the artwork is also easily setting a dark and scary atmosphere with the hands showing the muscles and the rotting flesh on the back of the hands.
in my opinion this has a clear message because it is playing the game similar to the actual story.

character task

Characters
this is an image of what the phantom horse of Dartmoor looks like as a side view at dawn

this is a in action shot of the horse in action shot during dusk
this is a front shoit of the horse of dartmooor at midnight
this is the  3 view of my character the phantom horse of Dartmoor it has 3 tones its colour will depend on the in game time to show it is more of a ghost

Bio: The phantom horse of Dartmoor it is well known for being a spirit of a horse which was known for creeping up on people and slaying many with its headless rider in the night in places people would dare to go alone and when you thi its an ordinary horse it will disperse and the rider may appear and slay you ...
for the hat of the mayor of Sheepstor

basic body design for the character of
Sheepstor
the cane and Monocle designs
for the mayor
concepts for his moustache

out comes

here are he two looks that the sheep mayor will have 1 for at the end when you find out he tricked you at the end of the game and the left is for when he sets you on the path of your journey home

character in shot / screens

this is a shot of when the characters i have included a character in what looks like the game when it is being played
I had chosen the image to be  the phantom horse of Dartmoor in a night scene this includes the items section as well as a menu bar and hint to find  out what it is you  need to do
#
this is another in game shot I chose it to be at borough tor reservoir for the water the sky was custom made but i had chose to include a sigh for not to swim in the water cause it wouldn't be safe and if they were to go into the water they would drown in the game

Name for the game and opening screen

1st of I had generates name ideas I had for example :
blind-man's adventures ,quest among Dartmoor,  mystery on Dartmoor, phantom of Dartmoor , gasply adventures but in the end I had chosen to go with  mystery on Dartmoor

after deciding on  a name i had started looking at a font for the main title and i had arrowed the top 2
i started with the text i used the same font as earlier and then i had used a gradient overlay and changed the colours i want in thye background and then i had used the radial blur and when i was done with that i duplicated it and rotated to create the circle i then blurred the  the font to give it more of a mysterious look
and painted in a low opacity brush to get the haze
and to finish off to look like a actual title screen I had added the panel to be closer to a professional look

similar to the last screen except it is for the options and no title

art work for dartmoor game

I had created 3 scenes that I can use for my children's game
I chose to have the images dark and hazy because that is the feel that I want in my child game because it gives the game a sense of mystery and adventure
this is my 1st image this where the character a character walk to the end of a tor to find this mysterious glowing town and due to the child's curiosity they will want to see what is down there

this is my second image this can be used in conjunction with the 1st image to be able to create a scene cause when he walks through the forest to get to the glowing town they will see this image and monsters will be in the background in the shadow the character will be forced to run in hope for escape.

after the he comes out of the forest he finds himself here and then they must venture on to find there way home  this character when they reach this point the spot the glowing town and they use it as a beacon to find there way home and find many mysteries alone the way
this isn't a scene however it is a texture it is a texture for a reservoir i think this as one of the small details that will increase the quality of the game

3 view plant animal and insect

roadsigns

This is a no cycling sign the red boarder suggests that it is dangerous and it is not safe to do it the circle means that it is an order rather than a instruction

this is a speed limit sign speed limits are for peoples safety if they were above the speed limit it would danger people safety including their own the red boarder shows this

this sign shows that animals are ahead in X distance warning about the wild life coming up
so they have to be careful not to hit them the colour is yellow this suggests that it is a caution

this sign is a directional arrow to instruct you which way to go you know its for health and safety because it is blue

this is a sign to show a risk of a landslide the red boarder show the danger but the yellow shows the caution

summary
signage has a simple use of colour and shape in order to be able to inform or warn any person passing by

task 9 the study of light and architechture

One of the artists I have decided to study is Dean Chamberlain.
it is a struggle to be able to get many examples of his work because his official site is down for the moment however other sites has galleries including his work
http://lightpaintingphotography.com/light-painting-artist/featured-artist-2/dean-chamberlain/
Dean Chamberlain  has been creating images like these since 1960's.in 1974 he achieved his degree in fine art he was one of the orignal light artists to create the images that he labels "light painting " he took images with a slow shutter on a camera to capture the light then use the light to manipulate the image. he has been improving his techniques since his work had been noticed.

Dean Chamberlain
http://www.shocaseme.com/?p=3318
this is another one of dean chamberlains pieces this is almost a completely different style however it is still using light in another way in this image he also uses light to give the image more texture also the amount of detail in the tree in comparison to the rest of the image stands out due to the mist near the subject in the image

Combat Wings: The Great Battles of World War II screenshot 1
Combat Wings: The Great Battles of World War II screenshot 19
Combat Wings: The Great Battles of World War II screenshot 22
http://www.gamesradar.com/combat-wings-the-great-battles-of-world-war-ii/slideshow/#screenshot/391287
These are screen shots of the game "combat wings: the great battles of world war II" I chose them  to show how light is shown in games as you can see the first image is a sun beginning to set you can tell by the suns height and the tones of the landscape. In the second image it is another sunset but this time it is a horizon view and the plane is upside down. besides the actual horizon you can see the land is still orange the third image is a day screenshot from what I would guess 10 am-7 pm I know that the game uses lighting quite effectively as well as in the last image the edges have darkened that will help show how trouble is occurring

for my research on architecture have chosen Luís dos Santos I took an interest to his photos due to the fact my game will have a dark and hazy feel to my game and as you can see he creates a dark image by using a negative blending mode on Photoshop or taking the picture with a negative on the camera

demo 21/01/13

this is the image I had created in the demo the main points in this demo is to know about outer glow
brush preset and and layer styles
the areas that i had used these are on the moon the smoke and the windows I decided to optionally add the outer glow to the windows to give the look of lights on  soon as it looked better than without it I kept it in
i created the smoke brush by selecting an area that looked like a puff of smoke on a different image and then clicked edit>define brush preset and

in this demo the main point is to use the clone tool and burn tool to create multiple effects on a image
the clone tool was used on the area that the house is on from an image of trees and burn tool was used on all the black areas with colour within its area
in the end had got this image fro, the previous image what I had done since the last image was create the island from getting a tree trunk and cutting it out using the alpha channels then use a mask clip to cut just the river out then cutting out the waterfall from an image using the alpha channel again transforming the images to fit and clone to blend them in and add trees
then add a stone texture and then bring in the whole image onto the scene and clone to blend images in  then duplicated that image to create the canyon and to finish the image off
I added the mist by creating clouds and define brush pre-set and then played around with the positions

task 7

this was a tutorial on turning a day image into an eerie night scene
this is the starting image
we started by adding a lens flare
then cut out the bubble
selected the area of the lens flare then inverted the selection

then used a photo filter and then selected the bottom cold option
we created the texture by adding noise and render clouds
we turned render clouds into smart objects and applied smart filters this allows non-destructive work flow

lower the opacity to see the building through the texture

then blur the mist and layer mask to thin out some of the mist

on a new layer paint some black on a low flow and 0 hardness

dartmoor pictures

Children's  pictures for game scenes
These are the pictures I had taken at Dartmoor that I can use to help create my game
I took this image to use for the texture for the typography or a opening scene as well as having this sort of texture through out the game
this image was took to help show lighting and textures of non moving water

this image can be used to show hints and tips or warnings to show that you could die going into the area
this image helps to show that I can use it for a texture of the ground as well as a power up to be able to move faster
this image was taken to show the reflections on the water to add to the textures on the water
this picture can be used for lighting and shadows
I can use this image to either show a canyon on a large scale with a small dot to represent you
and each plant can be a spore that can damage you if you run into a stalk
I can use the sigh for when a diversion occurs in the game to help show where you are
and direct you to the next location

I can use this picture to get the texture for the tree tops as well a a blue sky to show the mid day daylight
i can use a similar form to the tree to all the trees in the game  the more twists the more of a scary feel the game may have
this tree has a very unique texture it looks like a creature can crawl out of the roots but the tree can be used to show a dangerous path
this image maybe used for running water texture and  the colour for the leaves the leaves seem to be tones of brown of light shades of red and you can make a puzzle to be able to progress through the game
I can use the background with image manipulation to be able to make a puzzle and make it look like gates for a mini-game for a raft and then race against other rafts the animals would be on the raft to help show that it is a dream .
this is a over the shoulder shot that I can include in important cut-scenes  such as when he thinks he's just woke up when really he is a coma
another example of hint tip or typography
a location that one of the myths will take place he rabbit pi

these images are  location were Piskies, ghosts and shadows that suggest danger

these roses are to show a death scene and the plaque will change details on with the details in put at the beginning of the game

these images of rock are for the scenery that Dartmoor's famous for "Gems in a Granite Setting"
however in most foregrounds there are dead trees so the lifeless trees give the game a more intense feel inn the game making the player want to play more .

this is a bog there are many on the moors and in the game they will be like trap the player will need to press the buttons as fast as possible to thaw out of the bog.

the character will look similar to this person except the character will seem a little younger
for example there will not be a moustache and the head will be smaller
in the end the final scene before you wake up you will see this and realise what the world is like whilst a character explains he starts to feel more and more pain
